Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of taking College Now and similar dual- enrollment college courses?

There are so many!
  • Earn free college credits while still in HS. If you start early, you can complete an entire college semester before even starting college!
  • Explore subjects that you’re curious about, while fulfilling the typical introductory first-year college requirements. See the "Course Equivalency" list below.
  • Stand out during college applications: These courses show a challenging school schedule, curiosity, openness to new experiences, and the initiative to plan ahead. Also, the grades are weighted and can boost your overall HS GPA.
  • Get exposed to college-level work and expectations from the comfort of your own school. This experience will make you feel more comfortable once you do start college. Data from CUNY shows that students who do well in College Now have a stronger academic profile during their first college semester and have a higher graduation rate.

Who can take College Now courses?

Typically, courses are open to juniors and seniors. Each course will have a specific set of GPA or Regents requirements. If you meet the requirements, you can take the course.

Who teaches these courses?

Courses offered at Queens Tech are taught by our teachers who have been hired by CUNY as an adjunct lecturer. Laguardia Community College provides the curriculum and resources to ensure that the course is fully aligned with CUNY expectations and learning outcomes.

What is the class schedule?

All College Now classes run outside of the typical school day. At QT, classes will begin either period 10 or 11. They are held only 1 or 2 days per week and run per semester. Fall courses begin in October, and Spring courses begin in February.

Can I take a course at the college?

Yes! Our partner, Laguardia Community College will offer some classes you can take at their campus. These courses are taught by Laguardia professors. In this instance, the class will be made up of students from multiple high schools.

How many credits do I earn?

Most College Now courses will offer 3 college credits.

Will I also earn high school credits?

Yes! Each course will provide 1 HS credit. These credits will be extra elective credits. They will not be used towards your HS graduation requirements. Your final grade will be added to your high school transcript. College Now grades are weighted (like AP classes) and can help boost up your cumulative average.

When is course registration?

For QT Courses-
Fall semester courses: Registration period begins in May and closes in Mid-September.
Spring semester courses: Registration period begins in December and closes at the end of January.

How do I sign up?

The first step is to make sure you get a CUNY ID. First-time College Now students will have to do this. Once you’re in, you’ll have your CUNY ID (similar to your NYCPS OSIS #).
Course offerings, descriptions, pre-requisite requirements, and the QT interest form will be shared via Google Classroom.
If you’re ready to sign-up, use the Google Form provided to request your top two choices. The link to “apply” to College Now to retrieve a CUNY ID will also be provided at the start of the Google Form for any student that needs it.
Once all transcripts are reviewed, you will receive a confirmation e-mail with the course you are placed into, and it will be added to your QT class schedule.
If you do not meet the pre-requisite requirements for the courses you selected, you will be e-mailed with suggestions of courses that may be a better fit.

What about College Now courses offered at other colleges?

Queens Tech only has a partnership with Laguardia Community College. This allows you to be registered and to earn your HS credits with ease because the high school and college work together. If you choose to register for a College Now course at another college, then the registration and any communication with the college is up to you. You will also have to provide QT with the course information and your final grade if you would like it added to your HS transcript.
